Letter to Primary 6 parents after PSLE results
FAQ FOR ADMISSION TO ACS (BARKER ROAD)
1. If my son is not from a feeder school (ACS Junior or ACS Primary) can I apply for a place in ACS (Barker Road)?
Yes, you can apply for a place in ACS (Barker Road). If you are not posted to us, you can also appeal for a place in ACS (Barker Road) online through our school website http://acsbr.moe.edu.sg. Appeals close at 12noon on 24 December 2013. Only shortlisted applicants will be notified.
2. How do I register my son at ACS (Barker Road) if he is posted here?
If your son is posted to ACS (Barker Road), you can register him from 23 Dec – 27 Dec online at our school website http://acsbr.moe.edu.sg.
THERE IS NO NEED FOR YOU OR YOUR SON TO REPORT TO SCHOOL ON POSTING even though MOE may sms you to do so.
MOE will only be finalizing that when posting results are out. In 2013, we were posted 6 Express and 2Normal(Academic) classes.
4. How will ACS (Barker Road) stretch my son if he is in the top class in ACS (Barker Road)?
ACS (Barker Road) will stretch your son more in terms of competitions and opportunities to be developed in various areas. We have also embarked on a Talent Development Programme that will be across departments and classes so that talents are identified and groomed.
The cut-off point varies from year to year and is dependent on the applicants for each year. The cut-off point for Sec 1 Express in 2012 was 198 (only 1 student).
7. If my son qualifies for Express/Normal (Academic) which should I opt for?
This is really up to you and your son.
(i) If he is at the tail-end qualifying for the Express stream, he may not be admitted to ACS(Barker Road) for the Express stream.
(ii) If he chooses theNormal(Academic) stream, he will very likely qualify for a place in ACS(Barker Road) but he will NOT be allowed to switch over to the Express stream on entry even though another student with a lower PSLE score opts for the Express and makes it in. He will need to work hard to move himself laterally in Sec 2 back to the Express stream if he qualifies then.
*To enable you to make a more informed decision, this is the breakdown of the PSLE scores from both our feeder schools ACS(Primary) and ACS(Junior) this year.

Basketball Zonal Competition
During the December holidays last year, the basketball team trained very hard in preparation for the Zonals and Nationals in 2013. We were involved in Friendly matches with the Malaysian Youth and Team Kuala Lumpur/ Selangor during our training trip last year.
The South Zone Basketball Tournament started in January and we played against Ang Mo Kio Secondary, Catholic High and Fair-Field Methodist School.
We emerged victorious against all three schools with the following scores:
· AMK Secondary (93-10)
· Catholic High (71-60)
· Fairfield Methodist School (72-65)
Each school put up a good fight as they had their own strengths -- be it in defense or offense. It was a humbling experience as we were up against teams with physically stronger players, better defenders and even Basketball Powerhouse Fairfield Methodist School.
During the second round of the tournament, complacency caught up with us during our match against Pei Cai Secondary School. As one of the semi-finalists for last year’s C’ Division Zonals, they displayed greater perseverance and stronger resilience than our team. It was a setback for the team as we lost to Pei Cai Secondary 55 to 61. From the game, we learnt not to take victory for granted and to work as a team towards our finals.
We managed to pick ourselves up for the next game as we geared up for the match against powerhouse, Gan Eng Seng Secondary School. It was a crucial game as it would determine our continuation in the South Zone Zonals. We were more determined than ever after Mr. Tan, our teachers and coaches motivated us and told us that we were capable of bringing back better results. Their faith and belief in us really spurred us on as we went up against Gan Eng Seng Secondary School. They have always been strong opponents, but with resilience and the newfound determination within us, we managed to win the game with a score of 53-34.
Finally, we were up against Queensway Secondary School’s basketball team that had managed to remain undefeated throughout the qualifying rounds. We were extremely nervous and worried as we were not ready to be defeated again. However, Mr. Tan helped us calm our nerves. We gave it our all and fought hard against them. Alas, our efforts paid off with a score of 63 - 45.
Our biggest challenge so far was the Semi-Final Game against Mayflower Secondary. It was an intense match as it determined who would enter the finals. In the early stages of the game, we led by as many as 13 points. Once again, we were struck by foul trouble after the second quarter and we found ourselves trailing by a point. Spurred on by the loud and encouraging cheers of the supporters, Mr. Peter Tan and our teachers, we started to mount a comeback. Both sides matched toe to toe in terms of game and cheers as both our supporters rallied the players on.
Finally, we managed to bring the game home with a score of 84 - 79. Team Barker is now ready to face Catholic High again in the South Zone Basketball Finals. We are prepared to work as ONE towards victory and to put in our very best as we have always believed ‘ THE BEST IS YET TO BE’!

Literati: Literary and Arts Festival
ACS
(Barker Road) staged its inaugural literary and arts festival in March. Dubbed
‘Literati’, with reference to intellectuals who read and comment upon
Literature, the festival lasted from Monday, 4th March to Thursday,
14th March.
The
festival consisted of a variety of events and ‘happenings’ over the course of
nine school days, including two ‘showcase’ events, namely a Poetry Slam Final,
involving Secondary Two students, and a Story Telling Final for Secondary One
students. The ‘happenings’ consisted of
‘Flash Mobs’, spontaneous events that took place at the canteen during morning
recesses, as well as the opening ceremony itself, which was also a ‘Flash Mob’.
Other highlights included three film screenings, featuring ‘Catch Me If You
Can’, ‘A Knight’s Tale’ and ‘The King’s Speech’, two Book Trails, where
students from Secondary One and Two displayed their creative responses to their
Literature texts, namely ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ and ‘The Boy In The Striped
Pyjamas’ respectively, and a talk on ‘Telltale: Eleven Stories’ by Gwee Li Sui
and Jeffrey Lim for our Secondary Three Literature students.
During
the course of the festival, teachers and students were also introduced to a
‘Quote of the Day’ during morning assembly, by way of providing everyone with
some food for thought before they embarked on the day ahead.
The
objective of the festival was to provide students with a variety of events and
activities that would help to change their perception of Literature, so that
they would no longer see it as just an academic subject but as something that
everyone can enjoy and pursue on a regular basis, irrespective of whether they
study Literature or not.
